The gods help those who help themselves.

A Waggoner was driving a heavy load along a very muddy path. Eventually, the wheels of his wagon sank deep into the mire, and the more the horses pulled, the deeper the wheels went. Frustrated, the Waggoner threw down his whip and knelt to pray to Hercules the Strong for help. “O Hercules, help me in this hour of distress,” he pleaded. Hercules appeared and said, “Get up and put your shoulder to the wheel. Don’t expect help if you don’t try to help yourself first.”
