The folly of trying to win favor by behaving in a way that is not true to our character.
An Ass, living in the same household as a beloved Lap-Dog, noticed the immense affection the little pet received. Believing he could gain similar affection, the Ass decided to imitate the Lap-Dog’s playful antics. He began to frisk about clumsily, kicking his heels and braying, attempting to appear playful and charming.
This odd behavior caused much laughter, which the Ass mistook for approval. Emboldened, he tried to jump on his master’s lap and lick his face. However, the master, far from being amused, responded with a strong cudgel. The Ass quickly realized that what is charming in one creature can be deemed rude and foolish in another. The best way to earn respect is to stay true to one’s natural character and abilities.
