An Ass had served a harsh master for many years, carrying heavy loads and receiving little food in return. One day, while carrying a load of earthenware, the Ass, weakened by age and lack of nourishment, stumbled on a rough road. Unable to regain his footing, he fell, breaking all the pots. His Master, in a fit of rage, began to beat him mercilessly. The Ass, looking up from the ground, lamented, “Cruel master, it is your own greed that has brought this misfortune upon you. By starving me and overloading me, you caused this accident that you now unjustly blame on me.”
