The Eagle and the Crow

A false estimate of our own abilities often exposes us to ridicule, and sometimes to danger.

An Eagle, from the top of a high mountain, swooped down and seized a lamb, carrying it off to feed her young. A Crow, watching from her nest in a nearby cedar, envied the Eagle’s feat. Determined to do the same, the Crow attempted to carry off another lamb by sinking her claws into its fleece. However, she found herself unable to lift the lamb and got her feet tangled. The shepherd caught her and gave her to his children to play with. When they asked what kind of bird she was, the shepherd replied, “An hour ago, she fancied herself an Eagle; however, by now, she should realize she’s just a Crow.”
