Some people will only accept the truth after experiencing the consequences themselves.

A Swallow noticed a farmer sowing hemp seeds and called a meeting with the other birds. He informed them that the hemp would grow into plants used to make nets, which could trap and kill them. He advised them to pick up the seeds to prevent this danger. The birds, either disbelieving him or ignoring his advice, did nothing.

Soon, the hemp sprouted. The Swallow again urged the birds to act before the plants took deep root, but they still ignored him. Frustrated, the Swallow moved to towns and cities for safety. One day, he saw some of those very birds trapped in a cage carried by a bird-catcher. “Unhappy creatures,” he said, “now you face the consequences of your neglect. Those who ignore the wise advice of their friends deserve the misfortunes that follow.”
