Some honeycombs were claimed by a swarm of wasps, but the rightful owners, the bees, protested against their demand. The case was referred to a hornet. Witnesses testified that certain winged creatures, with a loud hum and a yellowish color, somewhat like bees, were seen hovering around the place where the nest was found. However, this description fit both bees and wasps.
A wise old bee proposed a decisive test: “Let a place be appointed by the court for the plaintiffs and defendants to work in. It will soon be clear which of us can form such regular cells and fill them with delicious honey.”
The wasps refused this proposal, which sufficiently convinced the judge of the bees’ rightful claim, and he decreed the honeycomb to them accordingly.
