For some, gratitude means simply refraining from harming their benefactors.

A Wolf, after swallowing a bone too greedily, found it stuck in his throat. In great pain, he begged several animals to help him, but none dared to try, except a Crane. Persuaded by the Wolf’s promises of a reward, the Crane extended her long neck down his throat and removed the bone. When she asked for her reward, the Wolf replied, “How unreasonable you are! Isn’t it enough that I let you pull your neck out of my jaws? And you dare to ask for more?”
